  Born on 4 October 1935, in Hajdúnánás, he moved to Budapest with his family in 1940. After elementary school he learned tool-making and simultaneously drawing at an evening school. He frequently visited exhibitions and museums and that is how he met Mrs. László Ravasz who told him to apply for a job at Műcsarnok (the Budapest Hall of Art) where he would work as an assistant at exhibitions in Budapest and in the countryside. In the summer of 1954, he started to work at Műcsarnok thus he had an opportunity to study works of art, get to know some artists who checked and corrected his drawings. It was also here that he met painter Ferenc Horváth who helped him a lot when he applied for admission to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 1955, albeit with no success. In Septemberof the same year, he quit Műcsarnok and was drafted for regular army service to the armoured forces in Rétság. In 1956 at the breakout of the  Hungarian Revolution, he was stationed in Marcali from where he and one of his Army mates left on foot to see their families in Budapest despite prohibition. After he had found that everything was OK with his family, he decided to return to Marcali but fearing that he would be imprisoned as a deserter he went towards Szentgotthárd and then crossed the Austrian border leaving from Körmend. From Austria he travelled to Strasbourg and then accepted a job at a textile factory in Muttersholtz, France. In the summer of 1957, he moved to Paris where he found a job and continued drawing in his spare time. 

In 1958 he applied for admission to the École Nationale Supérieure de Beaux-Arts where he was successfully admitted and also won a scholarship from the French State which provided for his living during his years at the university. His tutors included Roger Chapelain-Midy and Lemagne. His first exhibition was also visited by painters Ferenc Gáli and Béla Emánuel. Béla Czóbel, who also lived in Paris at this time, helped him a lot and corrected his works.

In 1959, he went on a study tour to Cannes and Milan. After returning to Paris, actress Zita Perczel and her husband helped him to sell his paintings. In 1961, the university could no more provide the scholarship for him and for this reason, as well as at the proposal by Béla Czóbel and Ferenc Gáli, he went to America in order to work there and earn enough money so that he can finish his studies in Paris and buy a studio. He arrived in New York in the summer of 1961 where he was admitted to the American Hungarian Artists Federation with the help of Miklós Hangai Szabó and from then on he regularly exhibited his works together with other artists in New York and in other US cities. He worked for three or four galleries for shorter or longer periods as well as for private clients who ordered works from him. In 1966 he received US citizenship. In 1967 he returned to Paris but he did not have enough money to make a living so he moved to Bonnieux in Provence. It was here that he met and became friends with painter Adry Novoli and her family. He returned to New York in 1967 and continued to participate in the exhibitions of the American Hungarian Artists Federation and other galleries, and also painted backdrops for an advertising studio. After 12 years, in 1968, he returned to his family in Hungary. In 1970 he went to Provence again where he left some of his works with the Novoli family, after which those works were exhibited. In 1971 he traveled again to Provence and together with the Novoli family he bought an estate with two houses in Pont-de-Rhaud. He settled there and bought a studio for himself. In the following years, he lived alternately in Provence and in New York and participated in individual or group exhibitions. After 1994, he could only undertook light work and had to give up painting due to his worsening eyesight. Later, he could return to painting and in 2001 he retired and moved back to Budapest. Since then, he and his wife have been sharing their time in Budapest and Pont-de-Rhaud.

Élete és munkássága

1935. október 4-én született Hajdúnánáson, családjával 1940-ben költözött fel Budapestre. Az általános iskola után szerszámkészítőnek, valamint párhuzamosan esti iskolában rajzot tanult. Sokat járt tárlatokra, múzeumokba, így találkozott egy alkalommal a Műcsarnokban Ravasz Lászlónéval, aki javasolta, hogy jelentkezzen a Műcsarnokba, ahol budapesti és vidéki kiállításoknál kellene segítenie. 1954 nyarától dolgozott a Műcsarnokban  így volt szerencséje alkotásokat tanulmányozni, művészeket megismerni, akik megnézték és korrigálták rajzait. Itt ismerkedett meg Horváth Ferenc festőművésszel is, aki sokat segített neki, amikor 1955-ben felvételizett a Magyar Képzőművészeti Főiskolára, sajnos sikertelenül. Ugyanezen év szeptemberében búcsúzott a Műcsarnoktól, októberben pedig behívták sorkatonának a rétsági páncélosokhoz. 1956-ban, a forradalom kitörésekor Marcaliban állomásozott, ahonnan a tiltás ellenére egy katonatársával elindultak gyalog Budapestre családjaikhoz. Miután rendben találta  hozzátartozóit vonattal elindult  vissza Marcaliba, de a félelem miatt, hogy bebörtönzik, mint katonaszökevényt, Szentgotthárd felé vette az irányt, majd végül Körmendről gyalogszerrel átlépte a határt. Ausztriából Strasbourgba utazott, majd Müttersholtzban vállalt munkát egy textilüzemben. 1957 nyarán költözött Párizsba, ahol munkát vállalt, mellette rajzolt.

1958-ban jelentkezett az École Nationale Supérieure de Beaux-Arts-ba, ahova sikeresen felvételt nyert, valamint elnyerte a francia állam ösztöndíját is, ami biztosította megélhetését a főiskolai évek alatt.  Tanárai voltak Roger Chapelain-Midy és Lemagne. Első kiállítására eljött Gáll Ferenc és Emánuel Béla festőművész is. Czóbel Béla, aki ekkor szintén Párizsban élt sokat segített neki, korrigálta munkáit.

1959-ben tanulmányútra ment Cannes-ba és Milánóba. Párizsba visszatérve Perczel Zita színésznő és férje segítettek neki képei eladásában. 1961-től a főiskola már nem tudta biztosítani számára az ösztöndíjat, ezért - valamint Czóbel Béla és Gáll Ferenc javaslatára - Amerikába utazott, hogy ott dolgozva elég pénzt gyűjtsön, hogy Párizsba visszatérve befejezhesse az iskolát és műtermet veheseen. 1961 nyarán érkezett New Yorkba, ahol az Amerikai Magyar Művészszövetségbe került Hangai Szabó Miklós segítségével, és innentől kezdve folayamatosan kiállított velük New Yorkban és más amerikai városokban. Három-négy galériának dolgozott hosszabb-rövidebb ideig, valamint magánrendelők vették munkáit. 1966-ban megkapta az amerikai állampolgárságot. 1967-ben utazott vissza Párizsba, de a pénze így sem volt elég a megélhetésre, ezért Provance-ba, Bonnieux-be költözött. Itt  ismerkedett össze és kötött barátságot Adry Novoli festőművésszel és csaladjával.  1967-ben tért vissza New Yorkba, ahol továbbra is szerepelt az Amerikai Magyar Művészszövetség és más galériák tárlatain, valamint egy reklámhírdetéssel foglalkozó stúdiónak festett háttereket. 1968- ban, 12 év után tért haza családjához Magyarországra. 1970-ben visszalátogatott Provance-ba, ahol a Novoli családnál hagyta néhány munkáját, amik ezután kiállításokon szerepeltek. 1971-ben újra Provance-ba utazott, majd a Novoli családdal közössen vásároltak Pont-de-Rhaud-ban egy birtokot két házzal. Itt telepedett le és rendezett be magának  műtermet. Ezt követő években felváltva élt Provance-ban és New Yorkban, és itt részt  vett egyéni és csoportos kiállításokon. 1994-től csak könnyű munkát tudott vállalni, a festést egy időre mellőznie  kellett megromlott látása miatt. Később újra visszatérhett az alkotáshoz, majd 2001-től nyugdíjba lépett és visszaköltözött Budapestre. Azóta felesegével együtt megosztják idejük Budapest és Pont-de-Rhaud között.
